FIRST SLP LOCAL POLICING PARTNERSHIP BOARDS WORKSHOP IN BO

11 November 2009 - The first Regional Workshop of the Local Policing Partnership Boards (LPPB), organized by UNIPSIL's United Nations Police (UNPOL), was held 11 and 12 November 2009 in Bo. The two day training and capacity building workshop was officially opened on 11 November by the Deputy ayor of Bo City council, Mr. Joe Pyne.

3 November 2009 - UNIPSIL seeks to broaden co-operation networks with Sierra Leonean partners based in the districts in the area of democratic institutions. To familiarize himself with the situation and the way forward for democratic institutions, Mr. Frederick Mallya, UNIPSIL’s Chief of the Democratic Institution Section and his team visited Bo and Kenema from 3rd to 5th November 2009.

SIERRA LEONE EMBARKED ON A JOURNEY TOWARDS PEACE AND DEMOCRACY

14 September 2009 - “Sierra Leone has embarked on a remarkable journey towards a stable, peaceful and democratic country since the end of the war seven years ago”, said Michael von der Schulenburg, the Secretary-General’s Executive Representative for Sierra Leone on 14 September in New York. In his briefing to the Security Council, Mr. von der Schulenburg emphasized that “during this short time Sierra Leone had to not only leave behind the horrors of its civil war but also start building a new national identity and creating the state institutions that will turn Sierra Leone into a functioning democratic society.

COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY
12 August 2009 - The United Nations is commemorating the International Youth Day on 12 August. This year the focus is on challenges of sustainable development and the future of young people around the world. UNICEF, WFP, UNFPA, FAO, UNIPSIL, UNDP, and the Special Court presented in a radio documentary, which was aired on 12th August on UN Radio their projects and special programmes to address youth issues in Sierra Leone.

OUTCOME OF THE PEACEBUILDING COMMISSION HIGH LEVEL SPECIAL SESSION ON SIERRA LEONE
The Governments of Sierra Leone and Canada co-chaired on 10th June 2009 in New York a Peacebuilding Commission High-Level Special Session on Sierra Leone. The meeting brought together senior representatives of the member states, the United Nations and civil society.

UNIPSIL: TRAINING OF SIERRA LEONE POLICE PERSONNEL ON CROWD CONTROL AND RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
In March 2009, Sierra Leone witnessed a terrible eruption of violence since the cessation of the decade-long conflict in 2002. Violent clashes involving mostly the supporters of the two main political parties, the governing All Peoples Congress (APC) and the major opposition party, the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), resulted in multiple severe injuries, cases of alleged sexual assaults as well as destruction of property, including burning of vehicles in SLPP’s offices.

HUMAN RIGHTS WEEK IN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2009

12th December 2009 - To end the celebrations in Freetown, a friendly football match was organized between UNIPSIL and HRCSL. HRCSL and civil society organizations working in the area of human rights formed a team which played against UNIPSIL. The match which was played at the national stadium practicing field initially ended in a draw-1:1. UNIPSIL team emerged victorious after scoring five penalty shots as against four from the combined team.
