Civil Society Platform on Non-Violent 2012 Elections

Fifty five (55) Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) met in Makeni for three days to chart the way forward for the implementation and roll out of the Non-State Actors non–violent elections project. The three day project inception review was to consolidate the unity of civil society in Sierra Leone; briefing of the wider group on the progress made so far, set the ground for professionalization of CSOs, develop common standards and operational framework, decisive action on who does what and where, refine structures and mechanisms and chart the way forward for sustained engagement.

UN Joint Vision Programme two holds training on Human Rights Approach

The UN Joint Vision Programme Two partners composed of UNIPSIL/OHCHR, UNICEF, UNDP Access to Justice held a capacity building training on Human rights Approach to Legislative Review for members of the Parliamentary Human Rights and Legislative Committees, and the Parliamentary Female Caucus in Bo City from the 16th to 18th of February 2012. The capacity building event, which targeted three most relevant committees of parliament drew together 27 MPs and parliamentary staff from the three committees. The training linked key human rights principles to legislatory processes including meaningful participation of all stakeholders, Accountability, equality and non-discrimination among other areas. Senior lawyers from the Office of the Attorney General and the Solicitor General’s office joined the facilitating team, which also included the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone.

Measles Partnership Ends Advocacy Mission to Mobilize Local Resources

The World Health Organization and the United Nations Foundation undertook a joint mission to Sierra Leone as part of the measles partnership advocacy. The objectives of the mission were to raise awareness among local authorities and partners on the Measles Initiative and the current challenges for achieving the measles pre-elimination goal in Africa by 2012, assess preparedness for the campaign and make recommendations for acceleration of activities and support local resource mobilization to finance part of the operational costs of the campaign.

UNIPSIL, HRS and Human Rights Commission celebrates International Human Rights Day

UNIPSIL HRS joined the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), other human rights partners and the global community to celebrate the International Human Rights Day, on 10th December 2011. The theme of this year celebration was “human rights defenders and the social media”. Celebrations were held in all regions of the country.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities UNIPSIL and OHCHR release a joint report

UNIPSIL HRS joined partners in commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDD) on 3rd December 2011 and supported the Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues (SLUDI) in organizing a number of activities in all regions. In Freetown radio discussions raised public attention throughout the week ahead of the IDD and a press conference was held on 2nd December. A march pass and a symposium marked the actual IDD. Similar activities were also conducted in Bo, Kenema, Kono and Makeni.

Sierra Leone maps out Strategies to implement UPR recommendations at the UPR National Conference Organized by the Human Rights Commission and the Government of Sierra Leone with the support of UNIPSIL Human Rights Section and OHCHR


The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the office of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with support from UNIPSIL/OHCHR held a National Conference to review the outcome of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) for Sierra Leone on the 14th and 15th of November 2011.

Germany continues To Boost Health Care With Nutritional Support In Sierra Leone

FREETOWN, 21 November 2011 – The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany has donated €500,000 to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for nutrition assistance to pregnant and nursing women and undernourished children in Sierra Leone. This contribution of the Government of Germany complements the Government of Sierra Leone’s health care initiatives to improve nutrition in pregnant and lactating mothers leading to higher infant birth weight, improved breastfeeding for children, and better nutrition during the first 1000 days of a child’s life.

Ministry of Health and Sanitation Conducts Stakeholders Workshop.

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) with technical and fi-nancial support of WHO and other partners on Thursday 27 October 2011 commenced a two day stakeholders meeting to validate Integrat-ed National Waste Management Policy (INWMP) and Integrated Na-tional Waste Management Strategic Plan (INWMSP) for Sierra Leone developed as part of the implementation of the National Health Sector Strategic Plan 2010-2015 and government’s “Agenda for Change”.

UNIPSIL Human Rights Section - Training On Treaty Reporting

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation, in collaboration with the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice and with technical support from UNIPSIL, organized a two days training workshop in human rights treaty reporting for ministerial focal persons on 10th and 11th October 2011. A total of 39 persons from Ministries, departments and agencies attended. 7 representatives of Human Rights NGOs and independent institutions also participated in the training.
