Women’s leadership gaining momentum in Sierra Leone

06 April 2013 UN Women in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs (MSWGCA) and the Gender Technical Team has concluded a three day workshop in the northern district headquartered town of Makeni, aimed at improving the performance of female parliamentarians as legislators.

“How do you review laws that are not written?”.....

A burning question asked by Sierra Leone’s female parliamentarians.

 

Because of the multiple constitutional, traditional and religious barriers that female political aspirants and candidates encounter when running for public offices in Sierra Leone, the women parliamentarians have called for a review of the written and unwritten laws of the land that favour primarily men e.g. the Chieftaincy Act, Citizen’s Act and more urgently the 1991 constitution.

Sierra Leone Embarks on Planning for Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination Survey

Sierra Leone will conduct maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination (MNTE) validation survey in April 2013. The exercise will be conducted in Port Loko District which has been one of the high risk districts in the country and will be carried out by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation with technical and financial support of WHO and UNICEF.
